Don't Kill The Buffalo...

So, I was all set to stay home and watch '24,' since I didn't have a ticket to the Devendra Banhart and Tarantula benefit at Tonic. I waited too long to get one and of course it sold out. I tried craigslist, nothing. I asked Jeff from CentralVillage to let me know if he runs into an extra. A little before 7:30 I get a message from Dave at BrooklynVegan and he tells me that he has an extra. Holla!

I head down to Tonic to meet up with Dave and give him a nice vegan treat (which will be on the market soon). There were alot of people outside looking for tickets, so I was lucky to have gotten one. Thanks again Dave! I've never seen Devendra before nor have I been to Tonic, so I was excited for it all. We got a good spot by the stage and waited for Tarantula. I enjoyed their set very much. I've heard good things about them and I wasn't disappointed.

Devendra took the stage around 10:00 and began his set solo with "Sight To Behold." He is absolutely amazing! He was joined by many friends including Tarantula, Will and one of the girls from CoCoRosie. He did a Charlie Manson song, how appropriate. Let me tell you, Chuck may have been a bit off, but he sure could write a good tune. One of my favorite moments was when he played Bob Marley & the Wailers "Motherless Child." The emotion on his face and in his voice is unreal, the way it shakes and purrs is beautiful. I was so excited to finally see him live, especially in a venue that small. He played a few songs in Spainish, including a new one. He also played "The Body Breaks," "Put Me In Your Suitcase" and "Little Monkey," among others. By the end of the night the stage was filled and they were going off, "noodling" as he called it. He played Antony's "Fistful of Love," which was absolutely amazing. He said that was their last song and then someone yelled out "Be Kind," so that was the closer for the night. All in all, it was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time. He did not let me down and I hope I get an Antony ticket because you know he's going to come out and join him. Thanks again Dave and Jeff, you guys came through in the clutch. Here are a few pictures, enjoy!
