Day two was the highpoint of the two day best fest. I got phone calls from a bunch of friends wishing me a Happy Birthday. I love my friends and family. Holla! The plan for the night was to see New Order. I saw New Order and I was blown away.

My homegirl Dee bought me tickets for my birthday and we left for the show around 8:30. I was nervous that we'd miss some of it, but I stayed positive. We got to Hammerstein around 9 and walked in and caught the end of 'Love Vigilantes,' which was the first song. I was so pumped that we didn't miss anything. This show was beyond amazing. I won't even front, hearing those Joy Division songs was so surreal. I've been reading the mixed reviews of New Order playing Joy Division, all I can say was that they were amazing and the crowd ate it up. I was shocked at how great the crowd was. Everyone was dancing and yelling all the words. Dee came to the conclusion that all great crowds consist of gay men. Every song they played was great. I was not expecting 'She's Lost Control,' holy shit! When they started playing it I almost threw up. Temptaion was brilliant as well. So crazy. This review sucks. I'm still in awe. Cinco De Mayo! Here's the setlist and a shot:

Love Vigilantes/Crystal/Regret/Hey Now What You Doing/Krafty/Transmission/True Faith/Run Wild/Jetstream (with Ana Matronic)/Waiting for the Sirens' Call/Bizarre Love Triangle/Love Will Tear Us Apart/Temptation//encore-She's Lost Control/Atmosphere/Blue Monday//Doctorin' the Tardis

the Decemberists- 5.4.05

It was finally here, day one of the two day best fest. I have been looking forward to seeing the Decemberists for some time now. I just recently discovered their music, so I never had a shot to see them before. I got to the show and was quite disappointed that Willy Mason cancelled his opening slot. I enjoy his music and was hoping to see him. Anyway, the Decemberists came out and it was on! They opened with 'The Infanta' and proceeded to play alot off Picaresque. They did play some of my favorites though, 'Los Angeles, I'm Your's,' 'Song For Myla Goldberg,' 'The Sporting Life' and 'The Chimbley Sweep.' The crowd wasn't too bad, it was very young. There was alot of singing along and some dancing occured now and then. One of the highlights for me was when Petra Haden sang Kate Bush's 'Wuthering Heights.' Her voice cracked for a second, but she pulled it off and it was beautiful. I have nothing to compare this show to, but i loved every minute of it and I'm jonesin to see them again. So great that they would schedule a show for June 23rd at effing Roseland Ballroom. Roseland, are they completely mad!? They go from playing two shows at Mercury Lounge to one huge ass gig at Roseland. I don't get it, I really don't. I missed the Mercury Lounge shows and was really looking forward to a show at Bowery or Webster Hall. I will not be going to this show and that's a bummer. Alex Rodriguez had such a serious game, finally showing why we pay him $800 billion dollars. First at bat-3 run home run, second at bat-2 run home run, third at bat-Grand Slam! He also singled, giving him a total of 10 RBI. It was a cold and windy night, but Alex and the boys made it worthwhile. The Yankees beat the Angels 12-4. Now, A-Rod is not my favorite player on the Yanks, but if he keeps this up he may creep into the top 5.

''Hey Face, what did you think of the game tonight?"

The Shins, Saturday

Webster Hall was packed on Saturday night, the first of three sold out shows by The Shins. I've been wanting to see them for a while now and missed them on their last tour. My sister bought tickets for us to go, she was equally pumped for the show. She calls me on Saturday afternoon and tells me her troubled car battery finally quit on her and she had no way of getting to me in time from PA. So that was a huge buzz kill. I felt so bad , she really needed a break. This also meant that the tickets at will call were in her name. I called to find out what I could do and they said ''Nothing really at this point." I brought a piece of paper with the credit card info on it and explained my situation. They let me go and allowed me to leave my other spot for The Tim, who spur of the moment decided to travel to my place from good ole' CT. He got to the show after 'Kissing The Lipless,' pretty good, considering he caught a 7:57 train in New Haven! Holla!

Now for the show itself. I thought it was great and they were really tight. But something felt like it was missing and I couldn't put my finger on it. The crowd was not moving at all (what a shock), and I still beleive that crowds play a large role in the greatness of a show. It was packed from front to back. I was up front for most of the show and later moved to find The Tim. It was very fulfilling. They played everything I was hoping to hear, new and old songs alike. The band seemed to be into it and shocked that they sold out 3 nights. I like Webster Hall, as long as you can get a ''good place under the lighting." It was a great night, I wish my sister had come but The Tim was a pleasant surprise. Also, The Brunettes were the jump off! They were very fun and the crowd seemed to like them alot. Plus the lead singer, Heather, is super fly TNT. Piss me right off! My dedication to the Yankees back fired last night. I was going to leave early and try to get in but I never did, so I'm upset. Plus, they got beaten pretty badly. I heard the show was great, better sound, better crowd and less arrogance. Well, there's nothing I can do about it now. They'll never be back to the Bowery but at least I got to see them on Thursday. And you know I'm already counting down the days to Webster Hall!

Speaking of Webster Hall, The Fiery Furnaces will be there tonight! This should be a fun show. I've yet to see them, so I'm looking forward to it. Plus, it will get my mind off of last nights events. There are still tickets left and the doors open at 6:00 (damn dance party)!

Bloc The Party

Holy Bloc Party! These guys are so amazing, my love for them continues to grow by the day. Last night at the Bowery was my first time seeing them and I was blown away. The song selection was amazing; they played 'Blue Light', 'Tulips', 'The Marshals Are Dead', 'Positive Tension', among many others. They were very chatty with the crowd, asking how we felt and getting us to scream, "Bloc Party Come To Party!" They joked early on about making it a Karaoke night, they teased a few songs; Evil, Mr.Brightside, Talk Show Host, Take Me Out and Yellow. It got a rise out of the crowd and the band as well. They seemed to be in great spirits and Kele's voice sounded fine to me.

The crowd was pretty good, but it could have been better. I was near the front, so it's always crazy up there, lots of dancing and singing along. They also confirmed the reports that they'll be playing Webster Hall in June, which lead to 'Boos' from the crowd. Those shows will be crazy and will sell out instantly! It may be bigger but as long as you get there early and get close, it's fine. I don't hate Webster Hall that much, it's on my street so that's butter!

The bottom line, these guys are going to blow the eff up! It's something we all knew, but now the ball is rolling and it's picking up speed quickly! They have fun and so does the crowd. Those are two things that are very important to a bands success. Come June we'll be lucky to see them at Webster Hall, I dread the day they play Roseland. Here are a few shots, enjoy.

OC=Oh No

Did last nights episode even happen? It had absolutely no substance to it. My frends have been telling me for awhile that the show is falling off, but I was in denial. I'm one of the few champions for Marissa Cooper, I even stood up for her when Twist (Oliver) came into the picture. I just feel really bad for Marissa and her life in constantly in shambles. So, I was all about her and Ryan getting back together and I still am. They need eachother. Look how she helped Trey out with that extra scrilla, what a girl she is, so kind. She always seems to be there for everyone and when she needs help, she's left in the cold. People need to stop hatin' on her and take her into their hearts, like I have. Marissa Copper will have her revenge on the OC! Believe that!

Bloc Party's 'Banquet' was played during a Sethela scene, nice to hear before the show. Also, Lou Barlow was played last night. The episode as a whole didn't go anywhere. It was one of those episodes that had very little plot and lot's of forced comic relief. The auction was lameowitz. The crystal egg from Risky Business, WOW! How shocked were you when Trey stole that ish? You weren't, no shit. The predictability of this show is so bad. The Hater-ade has been poured, but i have yet to take a sip. Not yet.

Finally.....

Last night was the start of my baseball season. When the Yankees start up I become a different person. I am very passionate in everything I do, but when it comes to the Yankees, I freak out completely! My friend Eric and I have season tickets and last night was game one of the season. It was a beautiful thing to be back at that stadium. Catching up with all my friends that I haven't seen since last year, the pinstripes and that beautiful stadium in the Bronx, what a feeling! So we pounded the Sox 9-2, it felt great to get at them again! Everything seems to be going back to normal in Yankee land; the Sox losing again, the Mets blowing it in the 9th and Tino's back! The Yankees are running shit this year! Here's to a great year in the Bronx! It's not a person, place or specific thing. It is a witty little phrase, a comeback, if you will. It is widely used and you may have even used it yourself. Here it is; "Hey, I like your (shirt, shoes, jacket). Where did you get it?" The witty ass reply, "At the store." Well, no shit! Thanks for the information, you jerk! Keep it to yourself next time! I'll put a different band on and I'll just end up switching it. This always happens, I'll listen to one band and disregard anything else. They are playing the day before my birthday, May 4 (Quatro de Mayo), at Irving Plaza. Tickets have been onsale for awhile now, but 'Picaresque' is out next Tuesday, so it will end up selling out soon after that. I'm not sure which night was better, but I'm leaning towards night 1. Paul was way more talkative tonight, which is to say he said about 5 things. They seemed really tight again. They do mess up here and there but it's not really a bad thing. When they played 'Say Hello To The Angels' the place went bananas! I did notice alot of young kids there. Which is great! Except when it comes to screeching and waving your arms all around. The lights ae always great at their shows and again I have to mention those shadows on the wall! Evedr since I was young I ws always infatuated with the shadows that artists cast. It some how makes it seem more real, that just me though. So it was beautiful, of course. Still. no 'The New' or 'Untitled.' Now i just hope thats the biggest venue we'll have to see them at, because I can't take anything bigger than that. Here's the setlist and a pic. I'll post more later on.

Next Exit
Evil
Say Hello To The Angels
Length Of Love
NARC
Public Pervert
Not Even Jail
Hands Away
Slow Hands
NYC
C'mere
Take You On A Cruise
Obstacle 1

Specialist
Roland
PDA

Interpol. radio city #1

These guys are so damn good. When they first announced the shows at Radio City I was upset with the venue size, but excited for the sound and visuals. Radio City has wonderful acoustics and the shadows that get casted onto the walls are amazing. Last night was no different. It started with Blonde Redhead, who were great. I was excited to see them as well. I love their albums and it all translated really well at Radio City. My friends from CT came down for the show, so I was happy either way.

Interpol was set to go on at 9 o'clock and I've learned from past Radio City shows that they are damn punctual. I learned the hard way when I missed some of Modest Mouse when they played there. They were on time and led off with Next Exit. It's what they've been opening with, but how butter would it have been if they opened with Untitled. The set was a great mix of old and new. My favorite song is 'The New,' but i never hold my breath for that song, of course it wasn't played. But other than that I was really hoping for 'Specialist' and they played it first song in the encore. So tight. I enjoyed every minute of it. My friends seemed a little upset that 'Untitled' wasn't played, but you can't hear everything. All together it was a great night. I got to see my friends and Interpol the same night. There's no complaining on my part. I'm so excited for tonight!! Here's the setlist & a few shots:

Next Exit
Slow Hands
NARC
A Time To Be So Small
Stella Was A Diver And She Was Always Down
Public Pervert
Not Even Jail
Hands Away
Evil
NYC
Take You On A Cruise
PDA

Specialist
Obstacle 1
Roland

Blue Order

New Order will be coming to the states, after Coachella. Let me tell you it paid off!

Finally, Sethela and Summer hooked up. I couldn't take it, every week I was dying. Maybe the Tobey and Dunst homage was a little much, but I won't lie I enjoyed it. I. Also, I'm glad that the home wrecker, Rebecca, hit the bricks. She tried to come onto Sandy again, what a skank. Take off! No one likes you, maybe you were better off dead. The whole Marissa and Alex thing is gonna come to an end really soon. It's just way too awkward. Although, Marissa did look alright in that robe. Holla! What did it say on Alex's shirt, Mischilous, or something stupid like that? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the two of them, it just seems to forced. The only thing that has to happen now is Ryan and Marissa getting back together. The lineup for the 'Sasquatch! Music Festival' is pretty intense. In my opinion, it's one of the best festivals this year. It's only one day, May 28th and is at The Gorge, a beautiful outdoor amphitheatre with great scenery. Enough already, heres the hoo-bangin lineup:

Pixies
Wilco
Modest Mouse
Arcade Fire
Bloc Party
Joanna Newsom
Kanye West
A.C. Newman
The Frames
Aqueduct
Ray LaMontagne
Jem
U.S.E.
Be Good Tanyas
Visqueen
Matisyahu
Bobby Bare Jr.
Smoosh
Blue Scholars
Benevento Russo Duo

More Pixies news! In addition to playing the Sasquatch Festival, it looks like they're going to play 2 very special shows in one night. Not like the last two shows at Hammerstein though. According to their agent at William-Morris, "We're looking at playing two shows in one night in the same market, with combination tickets. The first show would be a set of rare songs and B-sides, and the second would be the hits." If that does happen, I will be making a trip to wherever that market is, as long as it's not George, Washington! They'll also be playing amphitheaters in July, before heading to Europe and causing mass hysteria over there.

The Next Stage

After selling out the Bowery last night, The Futureheads didn't waste anytime booking another gig. I waited too long to get one and of course it sold out. I tried craigslist, nothing. I asked Jeff from CentralVillage to let me know if he runs into an extra. A little before 7:30 I get a message from Dave at BrooklynVegan and he tells me that he has an extra. Holla!

I head down to Tonic to meet up with Dave and give him a nice vegan treat (which will be on the market soon). There were alot of people outside looking for tickets, so I was lucky to have gotten one. Thanks again Dave! I've never seen Devendra before nor have I been to Tonic, so I was excited for it all. We got a good spot by the stage and waited for Tarantula. I enjoyed their set very much. I've heard good things about them and I wasn't disappointed.

Devendra took the stage around 10:00 and began his set solo with "Sight To Behold." He is absolutely amazing! He was joined by many friends including Tarantula, Will and one of the girls from CoCoRosie. He did a Charlie Manson song, how appropriate. Let me tell you, Chuck may have been a bit off, but he sure could write a good tune. One of my favorite moments was when he played Bob Marley & the Wailers "Motherless Child." The emotion on his face and in his voice is unreal, the way it shakes and purrs is beautiful. I was so excited to finally see him live, especially in a venue that small. He played a few songs in Spainish, including a new one. He also played "The Body Breaks," "Put Me In Your Suitcase" and "Little Monkey," among others. By the end of the night the stage was filled and they were going off, "noodling" as he called it. He played Antony's "Fistful of Love," which was absolutely amazing. He said that was their last song and then someone yelled out "Be Kind," so that was the closer for the night. All in all, it was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time. He did not let me down and I hope I get an Antony ticket because you know he's going to come out and join him. Thanks again Dave and Jeff, you guys came through in the clutch. Here are a few pictures, enjoy!

Oakland Represent

I went to see Rogue Wave at their first of two sold out shows at Mercury Lounge. I have to thank Jeff from Central Village for hooking me up with his extra ticket. I appreciate your kindness, thanks. So, I got to Mercury Lounge in time to see most of Dirty On Purpose. I thought they were really good and the girl was mad cute. I enjoyed their set. They finish up and then Rogue Wave comes on around 12:30. I was excited to see them live, Zach Rogue has a great voice and I was anticipating a good show. I was not disappointed. They played a good amount from 'Out Of The Shadows,' 3 new songs and a beautiful cover of Buddy Holly's 'Everyday.' All in all I thought the crowd was dead but the band seemed into it. They commented on how this was their first headlining show in New York and thanked the crowd for making it a great night. These past few days of shows have been great. Live music is the jump off! He was found in his hotel room in Florida, where he just started filming his new
movie 'Retirement' on Monday. Not only was he a great actor but he was also a very outspoken political activist and played a role in the Civil Rights movement. His movies included the monumental 'Do The Right Thing,' 'Get On The Bus,' and the cult favorite 'Bubba Ho-Tep,' where he played JFK. He and his wife of 56 years, Ruby Dee, received the Kennedy Center Honors this past year. The two acted in many films together and wrote a dual autobiography, "In This Life Together." His character, The Mayor, in 'Do The Right Thing' was a lonesome alcohoic who has been through it all, but he was the voice of reason and actually coined the phrase "Do The Right Thing." His voice will be greatly missed. Thanks Ossie.

You've Got A Face With A View!

Holy Shit! Thats pretty much all I can say about The Arcade Fire....round 2! I went up to Irving Plaza at around 6:45, only because I was ticketless. Plenty of people trying to get tickets, no dice. So, I see some of the band filing out and I have no shame, so of course I asked if they can get me in. The response was the same from alll , lady violin-"My cousin can't even get in. We're way over the limit." Win, "Dude, I'm so sorry, they're really lame here and we can't get anyone else in. I'm sorry, I apologize." He seemed quite genuine, so that was nice. But still no ticket. Then I spotted Regine and tried my luck. She was so sweet and very nice. But of course, "I have family that can't get in. You can try and sneak in with us in a little while. I feel so bad." So, after realizing it was going to be tough to get in I ask her one last question,"Are you going to play Naive Melody tonight?" She grabbed me and said, "With David Byrne man!!!!" I pretty much collapsed in her arms. She tried to make me feel better by telling me that, "He'll probably do it again. Someones filming it too, so you may see it." I went nuts, told her she was sweet but full of shit. Still no ticket. Nothing is stopping me from getting in at this point. Not only are they playing my jam, but homeboy David Byrne is joining them. Right after I talked to Regine, I scored a ticket. Went to my place to get my camera, knowing what is about to go down at the show. Got in and it was allover from there.

The show itself was way better, in my opinion, then the Webster Hall show. The sound was so much better. The band seemed more into it. And the obvious, David Byrne shows up to play Naive Melody to end the show. Holy Shit! They also played 'My Heart Is An Apple,' lovely addition. Win jumped on the floor to finish a song as well. Here's some pictures. I filmed the entire Naive Melody performance, I'll try and get it online. What a show! Beautiful in every way.

Take It From Your Heart...

So, the big night was not a let down. It could have gone badly, given the hour long sound set up. First, I thought Man Man was pretty intense. Not everyone felt them, but I really enjoyed it. The lead singer asked me what I thought after the set, I just gave him 2 thumbs up. They finished around 10:00 and the next hour was spent setting up their sound. The crowd was growing restless at this point. Then Winn comes on and introduces Final Fantasy, one of AF's violinist. He was really good and had projections. Very sweet music. He played about 4 songs, the last was called, 'The Dream of Winn and Regine.'

Now, it's about 11:30 and they finally come on stage, all 8 of them! They all line up and rip right into Wake Up! Holy Shit! The energy was so intense. Then they go into Laika, from there on it just grew into a frenzy. The floor was bouncing, it was crazy! All the banging during Laika, on the helmets, the wall, effin nuts!

They played every song off of Funeral and few old and new ones as well. It had the potential to be a complete letdown, but that didn't happen. The crowd would not let them leave. They had to return 3 times for an encore. I was hoping for Naive Melody, but no luck. They lived up to the hype, in my book. Now I just wish I had a ticket for tonights gig.
